Welcome to Paisley Petunia…part two!

I find inspiration in pretty pictures, endless possibilities in a bowl of Meyer lemons, the meaning of lifetime devotion in the wagging tails of our 3 rescue dogs, end-of- the-day bliss in a glass of red wine and now, the boundless, soul clutching meaning of life in the faces of my 2 little angels.

It's a happy, creative, joy-full life we've got here in the LA sun. Come play! Bring wine.

Homegrown

2 things that made me smile yesterday: the white rose bush that is blossoming in my front yard and a 2nd, surprise batch of peaches from my tree.

Now you know that C is the green thumb of this operation. By a landslide (hehe). But her newfound love of gardening has rubbed off on me and I decided to add some festive foliage to my front yard with flowering white rose bushes. The one above is my main masterpiece in the last 2 months of gardening. (We won’t talk about the other 4 that are not flowering at the moment – why?) Each morning the white rose bush greets me on my way out the door and I stop to smell my roses. Too sweet.

And the peach tree…ah, when I first came to view what would be my house, I fell in love with the peach tree. It grows right out of the cement at a 50 degree angle in the front yard. I timed it right that week I came to tour the house in late July, and it was flush with green foliage and golden orange balls of juicyness. Sold! It just may be my favorite part of my house.

The peaches arrive right on time each year, the first week of August. So three weeks ago, it gave us one load of a dozen fuzzy almost ripe peaches and I made C’s recipe, Peach Spoon Cake, to rave reviews. Now a later, littler batch is ripening and I don’t know what to make? Please send ideas!

p.s. Do any of you have a prized fruit tree in your front yard? Do you also experience the interesting form of warfare that we call walkby fruit pickers? See, we only get so many peaches (its a tiny tree), and one time a neighbor/stranger/fruitlover stripped our whole tree of all its fruit. I’m all about sharing, but please don’t take them all! We are under constant surveillance from our front door since last year’s raid, awaiting the surprise attack of overzealous fruit snatchers. If you are tempted, watch out because my roommate is a mean enforcer. But if you just ask, we are more than happy to share.

  1. My parents have walk by fruit thieves! They have a lemon tree in their front yard and people will drive up, park, pull out bags and proceed to fill them. If my mom comes out and protests, they’ll say “but you have so many!” Well, yes, but we take care of the tree by feeding and watering and pruning it and we lovingly give away our leftovers to our friends and neighbors.

I’ll admit that I’m painfully tempted when I walk past fruit trees with piles of fruit under them, because then I feel like the owners aren’t eating it and I would love to steal it. But I never do.
